Its character draws from a specific moment of folk improvisation: when a plexiglass letter fell from a sign, shop owners would replace it using tape, sometimes shaping it further with a craft knife. Boxi takes this gesture as its starting point, treating imperfection and mild inconsistency not as flaws but as the defining quality of the typeface.

About

One of the goals of Heavyweight since its establishment has been to build a diverse portfolio of fonts from different categories of typographic classification. One of the goals of Heavyweight since its establishment has been to build a diverse portfolio of fonts from different categories of typographic classification. The font Boxi confirms this strategy while shifting it in a new direction: compared to other typefaces designed by Heavyweight, it does not come across as a type for variable use in universal applications. From the first glance it is clear that this is a display typeface that stands out especially in details and at larger sizes. Boxi is derived from Animo, a typeface inspired by Spanish commercial signs known as rótulos, which came into being with a characteristic dose of folk creativity. Bound up with this creativity is a certain imperfection that is not a flaw but rather the most interesting quality we wanted to preserve in the font. In practice, individual letters on these signs, made from plexiglass and glued on separately, would sometimes fall off or come unstuck over time. When this happened, the shop owner would in many cases reach for tape and use it to improvise a replacement letter. Sometimes the letter was further adjusted and shaped with a craft knife. It is precisely from this moment that Boxi originates. The font deliberately works with imperfection and mild inconsistency, imitating letters assembled from tape with all the irregularity that such a process brings. The nature of the font reveals a desire to treat folk creativity as a value rather than a mistake. From the very beginning of work on Boxi
