Animo

Animo is a typeface inspired by old Spanish business signs, still found across cities and towns. Created by sign-making companies in the second half of the 20th century, these signs relied on a process of repeatedly photographing and enlarging small metal type, each iteration introducing new distortions and aberrations. Although purely practical in intent, this method produced letterforms of unexpected beauty. Animo draws from these imperfections, blending cultural history with the charm of an imperfect, analogue process.

About

Animo is a typeface inspired by old spanish business signs, or rótulos, which you can still find in cities and towns. These signs, created by sign-making companies during the 2nd half of the 20th century, used a unique process of photographing and enlarging small metal type letters. This method, though practical, introduced flaws and distortions, leading to unexpected beauty in the final designs. These imperfections and the creativity behind them influenced the development of Animo. The typeface captures the essence of these signs, blending cultural history with modern communication, while embracing the charm of their inconsistencies and flaws. Through some research and interviewing locals, we discovered the process we mentioned: they basically started by composing the business name in small letters. They then photographed the letters, enlarged the photo, photographed the enlargement, and repeated this process until they achieved the desired size. This method allowed them to scale from a few millimetres in width to sometimes even one meter adapting the letters to fit the sign’s dimensions. Each step of this enlargement process inadvertently introduced flaws and aberrations that distorted the original type forms in unique ways. Although their approach was practical, the randomness and imperfections of the process led to unexpectedly beautiful this specimen shows another context for linking fonts in a do it yourself mode.
